Martha Pearl Millard, age 84, formerly of Grand River, Iowa, was born September 27, 1917, to Frank and Minnie May (Anstey) Millard in Des Moines, Iowa. She died on Saturday, February 5, 2000 at her home in Osceola Nursing and Rehab Center in Osceola, Iowa.

In spite of being physically challenged since birth, Pearl lived an independent and productive life. She graduated from Grand River High School, She continued to live with her parents in Grand River, until their deaths. Then she manaaged her own home and garden, accepting assistance only when necessary.

On July 4, 1948, she was baptized into the Grand River Baptist Church. After it's demise, she joined the Grand River United Methodist Church on November 3, 1985.

In earlier years she was active in a women's club. She also attended many social events in the community Pearl attended Camp Sunnyside almost every year from 1973 until 1998, where she achieved many personal goals. One of which she was most proud was learning to draw and paint at age 61. She was featured in two newspaper articles as a of her accomplishments.

In 1984, Pearl moved into Leon Care Center where she remained involved in the community, she entered an African Violet plant in the Decatur County Fair and won first place as a result of her love and paticence for flowers.

Pearl loved to travel. She went on tour groups to the Wisconsin Dells; the House on the Rock; St. Louis, Missouri; and others when her health allowed.

Preceding her in death were her parents; infant brother Robert James Millard; infant sisters Edith Mae Millard; and cousins including Lee Hewlett and wife Cleo and Floyd Hewlett and wife Gladys.

Survivors include her cousins: Gerald and Esther Millard of Farley, Iowa; Jean Graves of Glendora, California; Mrs. Francis (Lena) Hewlett, Albert and Phyllis Hewlett, Gene and Mary Joyce Hewlett, and Carol and Gary Jimmerson, and all their families, all of the Grand River area; and many other friends and relatives.

Pearl will be remembered for her smile, sense of humor, sharp mind, and her determination to be independent.
