Obituary ~ Doris Edna (Reynolds) O'Hair Vanderecken

Doris O'Hair VanderEcken, 90, formerly of Van Wert, Iowa, was called to her Heavenly home on Thursday, October 1, 2015. A Memorial Service in celebration of her life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 11 at First Christian Church in Osceola. Private interment will take place at Van Wert Cemetery.

Doris Edna Reynolds was born March 25, 1925 at home in Clarke County near the town of Osceola, Iowa. She was the daughter of Harry Lee Reynolds and Birdie B. (Chestnut) Reynolds.

Doris was baptized at the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) at Van Wert, Iowa. She graduated from Osceola High School in 1942 and attended Osceola Junior College, Simpson, and Drake University, after which she began her career teaching school in Clarke County. Doris was united in holy marriage to James Benton O'Hair on May 22, 1947 at Osceola, Iowa. To this union two children were born, James C. and Janis D. After James' death, God blessed Doris with Paul VanderEcken, Sr. They established a home at Pleasantville, Iowa, and also spent winter months at their home at Mission, Texas.

Doris enjoyed many hobbies, including cake decorating, reading, and painting folk art. She was close to nature, and enjoyed sharing her appreciation of plants and animals with others. Doris loved antiques and operated an antique shop from her home for many years.

Doris is survived by her son, James C. (Phyllis); her daughter, Janis (H. Jim) Leeper; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; stepson, Paul VanderEcken, Jr; stepdaughter, Barbara (Mel) Beaver; five step-grandchildren; 13 step great-grandchildren; and two step great great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, James O'Hair; husband, Paul VanderEcken, Sr.; her brothers and their spouses, John (Nellie), Glen (Geneva), Raymond (Ruth), and Frank (Helen); and her sisters and their spouses, Alberta (Harold) Barcus, Icie (Melvin) Turk, Wilma (Marvin) Fuller, and Amy (Muriel) Turnipseed; and her special friend, Leo Williams.

Memorial contributions may be given to First Christian Church of Osceola or Guthrie County Hospital in Doris' name. Online condolences are welcomed at IlesCares.com.
