DAVIS CITY, Iowa - Howard Glee Thompson, 93, Davis City, passed away Monday, August 26, 2013, at Southern Hills Specialty Care in Osceola, Iowa.

Howard was born to John Abraham Thompson and Alma Fay Lynch Thompson on July 17, 1920.

Howard always maintained that his birthplace was under a rose bush in northern Harrison County, Mo. The family later moved to Lamoni, Iowa, where Howard graduated from high school in 1938.

He then moved to LeSuer, Minn., to work in the pea fields of Jolly Green Giant. He found the love of his life, Evelyn Sohm, and they were married in the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa on January 13, 1941. They moved to Davis City in 1945.

Howard had many jobs during his lifetime. He often said that he was a "Jack of all trades and master of none." He owned and operated a lumber yard for several years with his brother, David. He was an over the road truck driver for many years, hauling cars to the west coast. He occasionally was able to detour a bit to see one of his sons participate in a sporting event, sometimes not even having a chance to talk to him before he had to get back on the road. Howard also managed the livestock commission in Davis City and was in the restaurant business at the K Bar C with his wife and son, Arnold. Howard was a very kind and caring man, who was willing to help others who were less fortunate by giving them jobs and acting as a mentor to them.

Howard is survived by his wife of 72 years, Evelyn; three sons, Steve (Jan) of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; John (Rosie) of Santa Barbara, Calif.; and Arnold of Davis City. Also surviving are three grandchildren, John (Deborah) of Guam; Shawn (Tom Briski) of Berthoud, Colo.; and Mary (Aaron Oathout) of Cedar Rapids; and a great-granddaughter, Rebecca, of Boston, Mass. Other survivors include his sister, Margaret Locke of Grant City, Mo.; sisters-in-law, Joyce Thompson of Grant City; Margaret Thompson of Manchester, Ga.; and Marge Thompson of Lamoni; many nieces, nephews, their families and many friends.

Howard was preceded in death by his parents, John and Alma; and his siblings, Mildred, Ethel, David, John D., Alice, Paul, Lynden and Dick.

A memorial service celebrating Howard's life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, October 11, 2013 at Prugh-Dunfee Funeral Home in Grant City. The family will greet people at the funeral home one hour before the service. Interment will be in the Kirk Cemetery in Allendale, Mo., followed by lunch at the Allendale Community Room.

On Saturday, October 12, 2013, a celebration of Howard's life will also be held at the Davis City Community Hall at noon.

Howard will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Memorials may be directed to the family.
