Obituary ~ Elizabeth (Pierce) Houdesheldt
May 25, 1812 ~ January 10, 1883

Decatur County Journal
Leon, Decatur County, Iowa
Thursday, February 01, 1883

DIED – Of Paralysis, at her home in Long Creek township, Decatur county, Iowa on January 10, 1883, Mrs. ELIZABETH HOUDESHELDT, wife of GEORGE HOUDESHELDT.

She was born in Montgomery county, Virginia, May 25th, 1812. Her maiden name was ELIZABETH PIERCE. Was married to GEO. HOUDESHELDT in Jackson county, Ohio, May 7th, 1835. She united with the M. E. Church in the 16th, year of her age and with the United Brethren Church in 1837. She was one of the pioneers of the settlement of Ohio. In 1854 she moved from Ohio to Decatur county, Iowa, where she has since lived and died.

She was a faithful wife and Christian mother until called to her reward. She was sick only a few days, but seemed to be conscious that her end was near. She bore her sickness with patience and Christian fortitude saying that her work was done and finished and she was ready and willing to go. She gave every evidence of a thorough preparation for another and a better world than this, and thus passed quietly away.

Her remains were interred in the Witter Cemetery, Thursday, January 11th, 1883. Thus we record a long and useful Christian life that was strenuously put in for the upbuilding of the church and the accommodation of its members, liberal, zealous and persevering, she lived as the Christian liveth and died as only the Christian can die. Now, husband, children, grand children and friends of Mother HOUDESHELDT, we have one more duty to do in the deceased, that is to be right sure that we live the Christian life that we may meet her where separation will never come. We will no more hear her voice in the class room, nor in the prayer circle, nor in the sick room, nor around her bountiful table. But thank God we may meet her in Heaven. May God help us to do this duty.

JAMES BLAIR.
