Rose Eleanor Emerson, age 87, of Lamoni, Iowa, the daughter of Arthur and Eleanor (Corbett) Ricks, was born June 17, 1927, in Wilmington, North Carolina. She died at the Decatur County Hospital in Leon, Iowa on Saturday, March 7, 2015, surrounded by her loving family.

Rose grew up and graduated from high school in Rocky Point, North Carolina. She met her future husband, Christopher Plummer Emerson, II, who was stationed in the military service there. On September 15, 1945, they were united in marriage at Indian River, Maine. They were blessed with six children, Arthur, Phyllis, Edith, Bobbie, Christopher, and Eddie. Rose was a wife, mother, and homemaker for her family. In August of 1965, Phyllis started school at Graceland College. In October, Arthur joined her at Graceland and in November of the same year, the rest of the family moved to Lamoni, Iowa for Plummer to start employment at Graceland and provide education opportunities for his family. Rose worked in the food service department at Graceland for several years.

In her free time, Rose enjoyed knitting mittens and baby blankets for her grandchildren. She had a birthday card ministry she only recently gave up. All her life, Rose was an avid reader and a great cook. She knew lots of people and was a quiet social person. She was a member of the Bloomington Congregation of the Community of Christ Church.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Plummer in 2010; infant son, Eddie; three brothers, Arthur Ricks, Don Voorhees, and Freddy Voorhees; son-in-law, Michael Shields; and daughter-in-law, Kim Emerson. Survivors include her five children, Arthur Emerson and wife Dona of Addison, Maine, Phyllis Shields Hurshman and husband Lloyd Hurshman of Independence, Missouri, Edie Neal and husband Myron of Lamoni, Bobbie Jefferson and husband Denney of Warrensburg, Missouri, and Chris Emerson, III and wife Karen of Leeton, Missouri; 12 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; 11 step-great grandchildren; seven step great, great grandchildren; four sisters, Bobbie Rae Lane of Burgaw, North Carolina, Deborah Ann Hendrix and husband Doc and June Hall and husband Tom, all of Raleigh, North Carolina, and Nancy Seivers of Oak Ridge, North Carolina; sister-in-law, Josephine Rockwell of Jonesport, Maine; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

Memorial services will be held at the Lamoni Community of Christ Church in Lamoni, Iowa at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 15, 2015. Interment will be made at a later date at Rose Hill Cemetery, Lamoni.
