Sheryl Lee Chambers, daughter of Iroline and Russell C. Chambers, was born May 15, 1939, in Craig, Colo. and died Feb. 2, 2004, at the Decatur County Hospital in Leon. She was 64.

The family returned to the Chambers family farm east of Leon in 1941. She attended grade school at the Bradney country school and graduated from Leon High School with the class of 1957. In high school she played basketball and was an active member of the High Point Methodist Church and youth group.

Miss Chambers graduated from Northwest Missouri State College in 1961, the first of the teachers in her family to attain a college degree. She taught junior high home economics and math in Keokuk from 1961 to 1972. In 1972 she purchased the former Fashion Shop in Leon. She was a part of the Leon business community until the early 1990s. During those years she also became a real estate agent-first with her father in Chambers Realty and later with Iowa Realty. In recent years she worked during income tax season for H & R Block offices in Leon and Lamoni.

From the early 1960s in to the mid 1980s she and her younger sister, Janet, spent many hours trail riding on their horses and riding in horse shows with the Decatur County Saddle Club drill team. She designed and sewed many of the red, white and blue vests the drill team members wore.

When her health forced her to retire from active work, she turned full time to her craft work begun during her years in the dress shop. She was a specialist in fine filet crochet. Examples of her work and faith hang on public display in the sanctuaries of the High Point and Loving Chapel United Methodist Churches.

Miss Chambers was an active member of the High Point United Methodist Church and the Leon Craft Show committee. She enjoyed meeting people and engaging them in conversation. She maintained lifetime friendships with high school, college, and Keokuk friends and people of the Leon community.

She had a special way with animals, especially her horses and a special relationship with children. She enjoyed the children next door who visited her almost daily and the youth of the High Point Church.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Miss Chambers is survived by her mother of Leon; a brother, Jim Chambers and his wife, Roberta Chambers, of Corydon; a sister, Janet Chambers of Osceola; nephews, stepnephew and step niece and their families; and more friends than her family could count.

Funeral services for Miss Chambers were Feb. 7 at Slade-O’Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, the Rev. Jack DePond officiating. Organist, Virginia Webb accompanied vocalists, Carol Hanthorn as she sang Cleanse Me and Rita Noe, How Great Thou Art.

Casket bearers were Kent Chambers, Jeff Chambers, Jared Chambers, Steve Bettin, Duane Skinner and Roger Vanderflute. Interment was in the Leon Cemetery.
