SMITH, Dorothy, 77, of Garden Grove, Iowa, died at her home Saturday, November 9, 2002. Funeral Services are at 2:00 p.m. today, Wednesday, November 13, at the Slade O"Donnell Funeral home in Leon. Burial is in the Garden Grove Cemetery, Garden Grove, Iowa. She is survived by her husband Austin and son Randy of the home.
A memorial fund has been established by the family.
OBITUARY:
Dorothy Mae Smith, the daughter of Oliver Levi and Manda Ellen (Johnson) Allpress was born October 6, 1925, at Leon, Iowa. She died at her home in Garden Grove on Saturday, November 9, 2002 at the age of 77 years.
She received her education in Leon High School in 1943. she worked as a telephone operator prior to her marriage to Austin Dwaine Smith on May 16, 1944 at the Christian Church parsonage in Osceola. The couple became the parents of two children, Randall Dwain and Merlee Ellen.
The family farmed in the Weldon and Leon area until they moved to Garden Grove. Dorothy enjoyed having her nieces and nephews as visitors sharing her cookies and popcorn balls. She raised orphaned animals, grew a garden, and shared the produce with family and neighbors.
Dorothy served on the Garden Grove Library Board for several yeasrs. She was a member of the Leon Christian Church. She sang for church services and many funerals.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother William Allpress; and daughter Merlee Ellen.
Survivors are her husband Austin D. Smith; son Randall Smith, both of Garden Grove; brother Wayne Allpress and wife Doris of Lineville, Iowa and their family; sister-in-law Dorothy Allpress of Redding, California and her family; close family friend Melvin Neal of Cedar Rapids; Austin's brothers and sisters: Robert and Romaine Smith, Eldon Smith, Betty Green, Connie McClusky, Lola Helm, and Lali Cherington; nieces and nephews; special friend and neighbor Carolyn Cloke of Garden Grove; and other relatives and friends.
