Thursday, November 11, 1915, Page 1Death of Dr. L. J. Landis (sic).
______________
There was profound sorrow all over the county last Friday afternoon when the news was spread that Dr. L. J. Landis (sic) had died at his home in Grand River. Dr. Landis (sic) had been sick for a few days, but his condition was not considered serious, and his death came as a great shock to his family and friends. Some days before he had sustained a slight injury by bruising himself against the door of his car, and from this injury his system became poisoned, his general health having been poorly for the past few years.
Dr. Lucius Johnson Landis (sic) was born at Hopeville, Iowa, March 23, 1867, and died November 5, 1915, at the age of 48 years, 7 months and 12 days. He was the son of John F. and Emma Johnson Landis (sic). his mother dying when he was only three years of age he went to make his home with his grandparents, Samuel and Magdalene Landis (sic), remaining with them until his father again married. He attended the public school at Westerville, then took a course at the Capital City Commercial College in Des Moines, then went to Grant City, Mo., where he studied medicine in the office of his uncle, Dr. Johnson, then entered Marian Sims Medical College at St. Louis, Mo., from which he graduated April 25, 1892, with honors, being awarded a gold medal for his superior scholarship. He then returned to Grand River and engaged in practice with Dr. H. C. Bone, this partnership terminating in 1897, when Dr. Bone removed to Wyoming. Dr. Landis (sic) continued in active practice in Grand River until his death.
He was united in marriage to Miss Rose E. DeKalb, at DeKalb, on November 26, 1897, and to them was born one daughter, Emma Margaret, now twelve years of age.
Dr. Landis (sic) was one of the most popular physicians and good citizens of Decatur county. He enjoyed an unusually large circle of friends, and in his home town he was looked upon as one of the most influential and best citizens. He will be sadly missed in that community.
Funeral services were held at the home in Grand River on Sunday afternoon at 1 o'clock, conducted by Rev. P. H. Hawk, pastor of the M. E. church at Farmington, Iowa, who was a former pastor of the Grand River M. E. church. An imense (sic) concourse of friends attended the funeral, there being many beautiful floral tributes sent by sorrowing friends. His remains were brought to Leon Sunday afternoon, accompanied by many of his Grand River friends and friends from Leon and elsewhere, and laid to rest in the Leon cemetery.
