Obituary ~ Dr. H. E. Osgood

Leon Reporter
Leon, Decatur County, Iowa
July, 1888

Many of our readers will remember Dr. Osgood, who formerly practiced medicine at Westerville. A number of years ago he left this county rather unexpectedly, and it was said that he went to Kansas, since which time he has entirely dropped out of sight; but circumstance has recently happened strangely brings him to remembrance.

Dr. Layton received a letter a few days ago from A. M. Post, of Columbus Neb., in which he relates the fact that a short time ago, a stranger in that city was thrown from a buggy, had his leg broken and received other injuries, the accident occurring just in front of Mr. Post's house. The injured man was removed to the hospital where he died the following day. When the surgeons were dressing his wounds he remarked that he wished Dr. Layton was there to attend him, and being interrogated in reference to his acquaintance with the Dr. he stated that he had known him in Decatur county, Iowa and belonged to the same medical society with him. He told his attending physicians that his name was Osgood, but refused to mention the name of friends or relatives, or be questioned as to his past history, but died silent in regard to all these things.

From these circumstances and a description given, there remains little doubt that the unfortunate man is one Dr. Osgood who will be remembered by many as a bright man, a jolly companion, and was reputed a good physician. What strange shadows hung over his life no one will know, and unless these lines come to the attention of some relative, the time or manner of his death may never be known to them.
