Little Son of Charles Hukill Fell in a Well near Grand River Last Wednesday Afternoon.

A distressing accident occurred at the farm of Charles Hukill a few miles northeast of Grand River last Wednesday afternoon [October 25, 1911], resulting in the drowning of their two and half year old baby boy, Victor, in a well. Mr. Hukill was working in a field a short distance from his home and the little boy had accompanied the father. The boy had been playing around with his dog for some time, and finally wandered a little distance away where there was an old well, and when he stepped on the platform a decayed board broke under his weight and he fell into the well which had several feet of water in it. His absence was not noticed by his father for some little time, and when he looked for him he was not in sight, his dog being near the old well. Mr. Hukill ran to the well and saw the broken cover and called to George Foland, a neighbor who was working a short distance away. Mr. Foland came to his assistance and the child was taken from the well and strenous efforts were used to restore it, but life was extinct. The bereaved parents have the entire heartfelt sympathy of the entire community in their sad bereavement.
NOTE: Victor was aged 2 years, 9 months and 13 days old at the time of his death. He was the son of Charles V. and Mabel L. (Gill) Hukill. Interment was made at Young Cemetery.
