Obituary ~ Beverly Ann (Harris) Allen
December 04, 1938 ~ April 16, 2014

Beverly A. Allen, 75, of Iowa City, and formerly of Lamoni and Fairfield, IA, died Wednesday, April 16, 2014 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City from cancer.

A private family graveside service will be held at a later date at the New Virginia Cemetery, New Virginia, IA. There will no visitation at the Kimzey Funeral Home, 213 N. Main St., Mt. Pleasant, which is assisting the family with the arrangements. Online condolences may be directed to www.kimzeyfuneralhome.com.

Mrs. Allen, the former Beverly Ann Harris, was born December 4, 1938 in Lamoni, Iowa. She was the daughter of Leroy Walden and Marjorie Marie (nee Nine) Harris. Beverly graduated from Lamoni High School in 1956. She enrolled at the former Parsons College in Fairfield and received a B.A. degree in Physical Education in 1961. On June 15, 1963 at the First Methodist Church in Fairfield, Beverly was united in marriage to Jimmy Everett Allen.

Beverly taught Physical Education for a year at Sigourney Junior High in Sigourney. She moved to Hawaii while her husband was stationed with the Army there. Beverly returned stateside and moved to Fairfield. Upon her husband’s return, the couple made their home in Ottumwa before moving to Iowa City in 1966. It was there Beverly began a long career in the Education Testing field. She started with ACT in Iowa and then went to NCS which later became Pearson, as they were companies contracted with work for the Department of Education. She was instrumental in managing call centers which were set up to answer questions and solve problems for the Dept. of Education. Beverly was a trainer for the employees of the companies in the related fields, working with the software necessary to the companies’ functions. She retired in 2004.

Beverly was a member of the Thursday Night Ladies Club, which was made up of her colleagues who shared an interest in antiques. She loved to be with her grandchildren and share with them in their Wednesday after school sing-along sessions.

Those thankful for sharing in Beverly’s life include her husband of 50 years, Jim of Iowa City; 3 sons – Mike Allen of Iowa City, Terry Allen and his wife Megan of Riverside and KC Allen of Iowa City, and three grandchildren – Tyler, Jacob and Kylie Allen of Riverside.

Beverly is preceded in death by her parents.
