Obituary ~ Rev. Dorsey Eugene Derrick
September 1, 1934 ~ February 10, 2013

Dorsey Eugene Derrick, 78, of Creston, formerly of Weldon died Sunday, February 10, 2013 at Clearview Homes in Mt. Ayr, IA. Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 22, 2013 at Crest Baptist Church, Creston, IA. Pastor Chuck Spindler and Dr. Brian Kaylor will officiate. Burial will be at the Maple Hill Cemetery in Osceola, IA. Open visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. prior to the service. Memorials may be made to the Dorsey Derrick Family. Dorsey Eugene Derrick was born September 1, 1934 in Webster County, MO to Elisa Florence Richerson and John Wesley Derrick. He attended Elkland High School graduating in 1952. Dorsey was ordained as a minister in 1953 at the Candock Baptist Church, Lebanon, MO. He continued his education at Southwest Baptist College, Bolivar, MO and later at Drury College, Springfield, MO graduating in 1960.

On August 21, 1956 Dorsey Derrick was united in marriage to Carolyn Eliza Bay at Shiloh Baptist Church in Robertsville, MO. They settled in Buffalo, MO where Dorsey taught elementary school. Dorsey also served as pastor to Candock and Plad (Tunas, MO) Baptist Churches and later to Union Mound Baptist Church, Elkland, MO. In 1961 Dorsey and his family moved to Robertsville, MO, where he taught for the next ten years at Vandover School. While Dorsey and his family were in Robertsville he served as pastor to the Shiloh Baptist Church and later to the Leslie Baptist Church, Leslie, MO.

In 1971, they moved to Weldon, IA where Dorsey taught school in Weldon and later in Osceola. He retired after a total of 40 plus years as an educator. Dorsey planted the First Baptist Church, Osceola, IA with services initially held in an old dentist office building near the Fareway Grocery Store and later in the current church building which was constructed under Dorsey's leadership. He served as pastor for a total of 27 years, before moving to Creston in 1999.

Dorsey was an active member of the Crest Baptist Church and actively involved in the Billy Graham Crusade. He enjoyed his horses and digging holes for his wife to plant trees in. He also played an active role in writing the constitution for the Baptist Convention of Iowa.

Dorsey is survived by his wife Carolyn Derrick of Creston; three daughters, Oma (husband Tom) Dixon of Fort Atkinson, WI, Carol (husband Doug) Kaylor of Jefferson City, MO and Rose (husband Scott) Sample of Billings, MT; two sons, John (wife Nichole) Derrick of Los Altos, CA and Wesley (wife Maria) Derrick of Palo Alto, CA; a brother Floyd Derrick of Rogersville, MO; ten grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Dorsey was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Viola (husband Loren) Brashears, and a sister-in-law Vieta Derrick.

Services were conducted at Crest Baptist Church, 1211 N. Poplar, Creston, IA, on Saturday, February 23, 2013 at 10:30 AM. Interment was made at Maple Hill Cemetery, Osceola, IA.
