Obituary -

(The Leon Journal-Reporter Leon, Iowa March 28, 2012)

MARY ELIZABETH BARR ... Mary Elizabeth Barr, daughter of Lawrence William and Cornelia Lydia [Ellis] Day, was born in LeRoy, Iowa on December 10, 1912, at Pearl's II, Eden for Elders in Princeton, Missouri, at the age of 99 years.

Mary was united in marriage to Forrest Dean Barr on July 3, 1939, in Chariton, Iowa. Dean preceded her in death on August 11, 2001. She was also preceded in death by her parents; her four sisters, Mildred Greenlee, Ruth Burley, Vivian Garton, and Wilma Baughman; and by a niece Camille Davison. She is survived by her nephew, Michael Greenlee (and his wife, Christine) of Princeton, Missouri; a niece, Karen McVey, of Moore, Oklahoma; a grand nephew, Ed Davison; six grand nieces, Vickie Ryals, Janice Curtis, Deborah Rollins, Rondah McVey, Andrea Richards, and Gretchen Cleppe; and by several great-grand nieces and nephews.

Mary was raised in Humeston, Iowa where she graduated from high school and enjoyed playing basketball. After high school as a young lady, she worked at the local drugstore in Humeston. After her marriage to Dean, they lived in Nebraska and Western Iowa for 11 years while Dean worked on road construction. During those years, Mary worked at a Military PX Store in Lincoln, Nebraska. In 1950, they returned to a farm south of Humeston where Dean row cropped and raised cattle and pits, and Mary raised and sold chickens and eggs, and always had a large garden. In 1971, they built and moved to their new home in Humeston. Dean continued farming until 1974, and they sold the farm in 1976.

Mary enjoyed playing bridge, golfing, having lunch at the senior center, and attending the Humeston Christian United Methodist Church. She and Dean wintered in Ormond Beach, Florida, for 19 years, and enjoyed traveling. Mary was a very loving "Motherly" Aunt to her sister's children and their grand and great-grandchildren and always claimed them as her own.

Due to failing health in December of 2007, Mary moved to Pearl's Residential Care Center in Princeton, Missouri, to be closer to her nephew, Mike and his wife Christine, who was Mary's very special caregiver for the last several years. On November 3, 2008, she became a resident of Pearl's II Eden for Elders in Princeton where the staff loved her very much.
