DEATH NOTICE:

HORNEY, Joseph Frend, 79, of rural Davis City, Iowa, died on Tuesday, December 20, 2011 at the Decatur County Hospital in Leon, Iowa. Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 24, 2011 at Slade-O'Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, Iowa with Pastor Ron Helton officiating. Burial was held in the Hamilton Cemetery, near Pleasanton, Iowa.

JOSEPH FREND HORNEY ... Joseph Frend Horney, age 79 of rural Davis City, Iowa, the son of Frend Clarence and Ethel Florence [Johnson] Horney, was born on February 22, 1932 west of Davis City, Iowa. He died at the Decatur County Hospital in Leon, Iowa on Tuesday, December 20, 2011.

Joe graduated from Leon High School in 1951. He then farmed with his dad. On February 3, 1952, he married Twyla LaRee Poush. They lived east of Davis City until they bought their home farm northeast of Pleasanton, Iowa in March 1961. They were blessed with four children, Dennis, Doug, Debra, and David.

Over the years, Joe worked as a heavy equipment operator for several employers, mainly Decatur County, Iowa before becoming the bus mechanic at Central Decatur Schools in Leon. He retired in 1994.

After Twyla's death on October 31, 1998, Joe started collecting tractors. He enjoyed showing them off a parades in the area. He also enjoyed attending farm auctions and meeting his friends at the Dairy Queen in Leon every evening. Joe was good with his hands and made many metal and wooden gifts for his family and friends, such as lawn ornaments, clocks, and lanterns. He could look at a picture and make it.

Preceding him in death were his parents; parents-in-law; wife Twyla; infant sister Betty; two brothers-in-law, Sandy Stark and Paul Eastin. survivors include his children, Dennis and Cindy Horney of Leon, Doug and Brenda Horney of Davis City, Debbie and Don Coe of Plano, Iowa, and Dave and Susan Horney of Leon; five grandchildren, Diane Horney, Janet Weirich, Terri and Jon Leahy, Nicholas Horney, and Meghan Horney; six great grandchildren, Nikko Weirich, Madison, Abigail, Taylor, Grace, and Kimber Jo Leahy; five step grandchildren; 16 step great grandchildren; seven step great, great grandchildren; two sisters, Evelyn Eastin of Leon and Nina Stark of Casper, Wyoming; sister-in-law Clella Hill and husband Roy of Leon; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and many friends.
