SMITH, Jerry Lee, 64, of Leon, died on Monday, September 5, 2011 at his home. Funeral services are pending through Slade-O'Donnell Funeral Home in Leon.

SMITH, Jerry Lee, 64, of Leon, Iowa died on Monday, September 5, 2011 at his home. Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, September 16, 2011 at Slade-O'Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, Iowa, with Rev. Max Carmichael officiating. Burial was at the Decatur Cemetery in Decatur, Iowa, with Military Honors by Cowl-Scott American Legion Post #80 of Leon and Escort by Patriot Guard Riders of Iowa.

A memorial fund had been established by the family.

JERRY LEE SMITH ... Jerry lee Smith, age 64 of Leon, Iowa, son of Stella Mae Ingram and Fred Leroy Smith, was born January 24, 1947 on his grandparents' farm west of Davis City, Iowa. Jerry died September 5, 2011 at home in Leon after his battle with cancer, during which time his family cared for him.

Jerry grew up on a farm near Davis City and attended school in Davis City and Lamoni. He served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam for four years as a mechanic and cook with the 101st Airborne Division. Following his honorable discharge, Jerry served in the National Guard for 14 years.

Jerry drove a truck for a number of years, and that was something he was very proud of. He worked as a laborer doing "anything and everything" - construction, laying concrete, and farming.

Jerry married Judy McCullough on May 20, 1978. One daughter, Sheila Marie, was born to them. They were later divorced.

Jerry married Sheila Crist on August 16, 1992. Step-daughter Nichole and step-son Richard joined the family.

Jerry was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Leon.

He was an outdoors man who enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, planting flowers, and raising animals. Jerry loved spending time with his family and friends and camping with his grandkids. He also liked working on cars.

Preceding Jerry in death were his parents Fred and Stella; brother Larry Smith; and several other siblings.

Survivors include his wife Sheila Smith of Leon; daughter Sheila Deemer and husband Jens of Decatur; son Philip Smith of Anamosa, Iowa; daughter Paula Simpson and husband Paul of Winterset, Iowa; step-daughter Nichole Curl and husband Ed of Leon; step-son Richard Putney and wife Patricia of Leon; six grandchildren: Sydney Hullinger, Aspen Eslick, Chase Deemer, Axel Deemer, Alena Flowers, and David Flowers; six step-grandchildren: Heather Crist, Brittany Curl, Savannah Curl, Elizabeth Curl, Skyler Putney, and Dakota Putney; brothers and sisters: Donna and Gary Keller, Dora Ann Shields, Kathy Smith, Lonnie and Judy Smith, Murl Johnson, Marilyn and Lonnie Rumley, Joyce and Charles Easton, Bobby and Gayle Wasson, Dickie Wasson and Pam and Shields, Deloris and Chris Phillips, Nancy and Billy Wion, and Timmie and Robin Wasson; and other relatives and friends.
