McDOWELL, JOYCE, 72, of rural Osceola, died at her home on Friday, October 1, 2010. Services are pending through Slade-O'Donnell Funeral Home in Leon.

JOYCE ELAINE McDOWELL ... Joyce Elaine McDowell, age 72, of rural Osceola, Iowa, the daughter of Clarence Ross and Mildred Arlene [Plummer] Norman, was born July 12, 1938 in Decatur County, Iowa. She died at her home on Friday, October 1, 2010.

Joyce graduated from Leon High School in 1956. On April 16, 1959 she married Gary Lee McDowell in Omaha, Nebraska. Together they raised children, Desiree, Tracy, and Shane, and shared 51 years of marriage. They lived in Clarke County, Iowa, most recently on the same farm since 1970.

Joyce worked as evening supervisor at Furnace Electric and the Osceola Public Library, but above all, she was a wife, mother, and homemaker to her family. She was a homebody, who enjoyed nurturing children, cooking and being outside walking. She enjoyed attending the grandsons' school activities.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband Gary McDowell on May 16, 2010; and granddaughter, Kasey Johnston.

Survivors include her children, Desi Siefkas of Indianola, Iowa, Tracy McDowell of Baltimore, Maryland, and Shane McDowell and wife Becky of Osceola; grandsons, Greg Siefkas, Cade Paullin, Dalton and Dillon McDowell; sisters, Shirley Norman and husband Jesse of Des Moines, Iowa, Sonna Gieken of Des Moines, June Hill of Denver, Colorado, and Connie Qualls of Nashville, Tennessee; Gary's family; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
