DEATHS: KINDRED, CHESTER MERLE "Chet", 95, of Leon, Iowa, died March 17, 2006 at the Decatur County Hospital in Leon. Following cremation, graveside memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, March 24 at Leon Cemetery with Rev. Max Carmichael officiating. Arrangements are through Slade-O'Donnell Funeral Home of Leon.

CHET KINDRED ... Chester Merle "Chet" Kindred, age 95 of Leon, Iowa, son of Levi Merle and Sophia Elizabeth [Duff] Kindred, was born January 6, 1911 in Yuma County, Colorado and died March 17, 2006 at the Decatur County Hospital in Leon.

Chet graduated from Leon High School in 1929. He married Geneva Golda Everman on July 24, 1937 in Mercer, Missouri. They made their home in Leon.

Chet entered the U.S. Army, and he and Geneva went to Fort Polk, Louisiana. They lived other places in the united States during his service. Chet went overseas during World War II, where he served in the European Theater in France and later helped liberate Auschwitz. Chet was a tank mechanic. He was a 1st Sergeant in the 11th Armored Division attached to General Patton.

Chet worked as an auto mechanic in Ed Hansel's Garage. He then owned and operated the Phillips 66 station in Leon. Chet later worked at the Chevy garage. He always enjoyed working on cars.

Everyone knew Chet, and he was a good friend. He and Geneva enjoyed many hours driving around Leon and southern Iowa. They took good care of each other, sharing 64 years of marriage.

Chet was a 50-year Mason and a member of Grand River Lodge #78 A.F.&A.M. He spent many years on the Leon Volunteer Fire Department. Chet liked horseback riding and was a member of the Leon Saddle Club. He enjoyed playing golf and was a member of the Leon Golf and Country Club.

Preceding Chet in death were his wife Geneva Kindred on September 9, 2001; infant twin sisters Audie and Maudie Kindred; and sisters: Hazel Forsythe, Helen Lewis, and Bronia McLaughlin.

He is survived by sister Fleta Luitjen of Lamont, Iowa; nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
