ELVER ALEXANDER SMITH, eldest son of DIVILLA and LYDIA ANN (BERRY) SMITH was
born Oct. 6th, 1866, near High Point, Decatur County, Iowa. Departed this
life at his home in High Point Township May 21st, 1914. He was united in
marriage to ETTA JANE RAINS, Feb. 16, 1888. To this union were born seven
children, WILLIAM E., GEO. F., EARL A., ALMA E., CHARLES ROY, CARL L., and
VELVA MARIE, ALMA E. and CHARLES ROY, dying in infancy. The rest were all
present at the time of his death.

"ELVER", as he was commonly known, was loved and respected by all who knew
him, he having spent his entire life in this community with the exception of
about three years, two of which were at Creston, Iowa, and one year in
Vernon County, Mo. He gave his heart to Christ Sept. 15, 1913, and has
since lived a devoted Christian, his one purpose in life being to honor and
serve his Lord. He suffered greatly during the latter part of his sickness
but bore it with great patience, showing in all a Christ-like spirit and
oftentimes expressing his desire to depart and be with Christ.

The funeral services were held at the home May 22nd, conducted by Rev.
Goebin, and he was laid to rest in the High Point Cemetery.
