Leon, Iowa
Thursday, June 5, 1913

Last Friday evening the residents of Leon were greatly pained and shocked to
hear of the finding of the body of CHARLES CARROLL, of this city, at his
home in the basement of the south school building, where he had been janitor
for the past two years. Being missed from the Memorial Day services some of
his comrades called to ascertain the reason for his absence, but were
horrified to find his body with one arm in a barrel and the body partly
leaning against a post, apparently having died in the act of gathering
kindling with which to start a fire to get supper. Dr. Layton, the coroner,
was called and the body ordered removed to the undertaking rooms of F.S.
Stewart and prepared for burial.

The funeral took place Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, at the M.E. Church,
conducted by Rev. Fansher, Pastor of the church. The funeral and exercises
were in charge of the I.O.O.F. Lodge of which he was an honored member,
assisted by his comrades of the G.A.R. Post, of this city. The pall bearers
were the members of the school board, and Supt. O.M. Gass. The floral
offerings were profuse, a large pillow of cut flowers being from the pupils
of the south school. Interment was in the Leon Cemetery where the
ritualistic ceremonies of Odd Fellowship were carried out at the grave.

Mr. CARROLL had no direct relatives here. He has a daughter living in
California, Mrs. MINNIE BRADY. His wife died about five years ago and for a
number of years he has been living alone. Little is known of his early life
He is supposed to have been born in Germany, and from the records of the
Masonic and I.O.O.F. Lodges of this city it is learned that he was past 68
years of age. He was a wagon maker by trade, and for more than forty years,
off and on, has been janitor of the Leon schools and the court house. While
it cannot be said that he left any considerable amount of property, his was
a heritage that any man might be proud of; the respect of his brothers and
comrades of the Masonic and I.O.O.F. Orders and the G.A.R., the love of the
school children, the teachers and officials, and the esteem of his neighbors
and friends. Peace to his ashes.
