'Pioneer Citizen Passes Away. Erected the First Store Building in the Town
of Leon.'

---------------------------------------------
Mr. ISAAC N. CLARK, pioneer merchant and one of the most prominent citizens
of this section has passed away. The news of his sudden death was a great
shock to his many friends throughout the county and this part of the state.
Mr. CLARK was born in Tippecanoe County, Indiana, March 18, 1831, and passed
away at his home in this city on April 17, 1912, after but a few hours
illness, death being caused by neuralgia of the heart. The day before his
death he had been up town although he had suffered a slight attack of
neuralgia that morning. During the evening he became ill and suffered
considerably during the night. On the morning of his death he was up and
had walked about the house some. The attack that caused his death came just
before noon. His age at the time of his demise was 81 years and 29 days.

He was a son of WILLIAM and ANNA (ROUNSAVILLE) CLARK, the former a native of
Virginia, and the latter of Ohio. Mr. CLARK was reared on a farm, and when
five years of age accompanied his parents to Missouri. He attended the
public schools receiving a good public school education. He also attended
Edinburg College for two terms. In 1849 he commenced clerking in a grocery
store for a brother, remaining there two years. Later he served as clerk
for one year in a dry goods store. In October 1851 he came to Decatur
County and engaged in the mercantile business at a point two miles south of
where Leon now stands. He traded with the Indians extensively while in that
location. In the year 1853, when the town of Leon was laid out Mr. CLARK
erected the first business house becoming one of the earliest settlers of
this community. The store building was constructed of logs, the lumber
necessary being hauled from Missouri. In that building he was employed by
Switzer, Davis & Co. That firm handled a general line of merchandise.

To be continued . . .He remained with that concern for three years.
