Decatur County Journal
Leon, Iowa
Thursday, May 26, 1910Miss IDA BROOKS, daughter of JOHN and MARY ANN BROOKS, was born at Smyrna,
Clarke County, Iowa, Oct. 7, 1863. She passed to her eternal reward May 16,
1910, at the age of 46 years, 7 months and 9 days. When about 18 years old she came to Leon, and thenceforth this was her home.
Though sometimes absent for months, yet her sister's home was ever her own.
And during her residence here she made many friends who held her in highest
esteem. When she was 16 years of age, she was converted and united with the
Methodist Episcopal Church at Osceola. All the years following she remained
a member of the church and just a few months ago she decided to transfer
membership to the Leon church. Her letter was received but she was never
able to be formally admitted. For a number of years she was a member of the P.E.O. As city librarian, she
won a large place in the hearts of our people. For four years she served
most efficiently. She was the first to serve in the new building, taking a
great pride in it, and giving increasing toil to aid in raising money for
expenses. But her interest in the children was most marked. How
painstaking her efforts to provide them with the best of juvenile books, and
she did it from her love of the children. She was of a quiet, retiring
disposition and only those most intimately acquainted with her fully
appreciated the great kindness of her heart. She was never of robust constitution, but not until about one year and a
half ago was there any serious break in her health. After a few weeks of
illness she took a trip to California, going in February of last year and
returning the following June. She continued to decline and for weeks was
tenderly cared for in the home of her sister. Last November, on the advice
of the attending physician she was taken to the hospital at Clarinda, Iowa,
where she could receive the treatment of specialists. But the frail body
grew weaker until the Master called her from suffering to reward. Two sisters, Mrs. MARION F. STOOKEY, of Leon, Iowa, and Mrs. E.C. FITHIAN,
of Santa Monica, California, and many friends remain to mourn her departure. How appropriate seems the passage of scripture: "And as Jesus passed by she
but touched the hem of his garment and was made whole from that very hour."The funeral services were held at the home of Mr. And Mrs. MARION F. STOOKEY
Wednesday afternoon of last week at 2:30 o'clock. Chapter W.P.E.O., of this
city, of which Miss BROOKS was a member, attended in a body and assisted
with the services. Interment followed in the Leon Cemetery.
