Obituary -

(The Leon Journal-Reporter Leon, Iowa October 28, 2009)

DELANO SCHAFFER ... DeLano Eugene Schaffer, age 74 of Leon, Iowa son of Harry Charles and Pearl Alice [Taylor] Schaffer, was born January 20, 1935 in Pocahontas County, Iowa and died October 23, 2009 at Westview Acres in Leon.

Delano was baptized as a young boy at Saint Mary's Catholic Church in Humboldt, Iowa on October 1, 1939.

Delano married Bernice Fern Myers on February 17 1965. they made their home in Leon for over 40 years. Delano worked as a CNA at Frost Nursing Home and later for Leon Care Center.

He was preceded in death by his wife Bernice on September 25, 2009; his parents; other siblings; and very special friends Cliff and Wilma Cunningham.

Everyone around town knew Schaffer, and in turn he knew everyone - walking down the streets of Leon with his wife Bernice always about 10 steps behind him, as he had the longest legs which would not slow down. He was very proud of his achievements - being a CNA and working in the nursing homes, and always taking care of Bernice and making sure she had everything she wanted.

Christmas was the time for decorating. Schaffer would start sometimes in November, and there would not be an empty spot left in his front yard for another light or outside ornament. He loved Christmas lights.

The Cunningham Family was a very special part of Schaffer's life. He could never say enough great things about Cliff, Wilma, and their girls: Lora, Marcia, Jan, and Connie. He always considered them as his and Bernice's family.

Other special friends in Delano's life would include Linda and Doug Mills of Leon, and of course, Buddy Mills (his special dog friend); Virginia and Laddie Nimerichter of Mercer, Missouri, Janet and Wayne Richman of Leon, and Delaine Ploessel of Leon; sisters and brother: Virginia Schaffer and family of Mason City, Iowa, Harriett of Washington State, and Harry Jr. Schaffer of Illinois; in laws: Edna Peterson of Manson, Iowa, Lyle Myers of Indianola, Iowa, Aaron Myers of Des Moines, Iowa, Maye Moulten of Fonda, Iowa, Art Myers of Cherokee, Iowa, and Dallas Myers of Spirit Lake Iowa; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and many friends.
