Decatur County Journal
Leon, Iowa
Thursday, May 26, 1910NANCY ADALINE PEEBLER was born in Carthage, Hancock County, Illinois,
September 10, 1834, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. FANNIE JOHN,
in Leon, Iowa, May 21, 1910, at the good ripe old age of 75 years, 7 months
and 11 days. When she was five years old she moved with her parents from her birth place
to Jefferson County, this state, where in 1853, she was united in marriage
to SAMUEL ALBAUGH GARBER. Two years later, she, with her husband came to
Decatur County, settling in Center Township, where she has lived for 55
years. She and her husband united with the Brethren Church in 1854, and as he was
soon called to the ministry by his church, she, as a faithful wife, shared
the labors of a pioneer minister's life.Grandma GARBER, as she was called by all, leaves seven children, thirty-two
grandchildren and ten great grandchildren, who with her six sisters, an only
brother, and many other relatives and friends, mourn her departure. Her
husband was killed by lightning while in the prime of life, and for 22 years
she has trod life's pathway alone. She has seen much of the sorrow of life,
and has also experienced many of life's greater joys. Her life was an open
book, as she was absolutely without hypocracy . She never betrayed a friend
and was of a forgiving, sympathetic and jovial disposition.Funeral services were held at Crown Chapel Sunday at 3 o'clock, conducted by
her pastor, Mrs. Clara Flora, of Des Moines, after which her remains were
borne to their last resting place in the Franklin Cemetery, followed by a
large concourse of sorrowing friends.
