BUCHANAN, Madge Irene, 94, of Liberty, Missouri, formerly of Decatur and Leon, Iowa, died October 16, 2009 at the home of her daughter in Liberty, Missouri. Funeral service were held at the Slade-O'Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, Iowa October 21 with Pastor Dale Short officiating. Burial was in the Decatur Cemetery, Decatur, Iowa.

MADGE IRENE BUCHANAN ... Madge Irene Havens Buchanan, age 94 of Liberty, Missouri, formerly of Leon, Iowa, was born September 23, 1915 near Decatur, Iowa, the daughter of Roy A. and Addie Pearl [Woodward] Havens. She passed away quietly in her sleep on October 16, 2009 at the home of her daughter, Lois, in Liberty, Missouri.

Madge received her first years of schooling in a rural one-room schoolhouse, Jack Oak, and then entered Leon High School where she graduated. Through the years, she took college classes and graduated from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. Madge was united in marriage to Wiley Jennings Buchanan on November 27, 1933 in Leon, Iowa.

Madge lived most of her life in Decatur County where she and her husband farmed. She enjoyed her garden, orchard, and raising her chickens and geese. As her children got older she began teaching school. She first taught at Union Ridge, a rural one-room school, later she taught at the Decatur and Leon schools as a mathematics teacher. After retirement, Madge enjoyed china painting as a hobby.

Madge is survived by her daughter Lois Stewart of Liberty; daughter-in-law Loretta Buchanan of Bettendorf, Iowa; four grandsons: Douglas & Tammy Buchanan of Parkview, Iowa, David Buchanan of Bettendorf, Iowa, John & Tammy Stewart, Michael & Mary Stewart, all of Liberty, Missouri, ten great grandchildren: Johnna Stewart, Amber & Ben Schloman, Sydney, Michael, and Katherine Stewart, Emily & Ian Scott, Elizabeth & Brian Dennison, Abby Buchanan, and Andrew and Dawson Buchanan; three great, great grandchildren: Ellie Scott, Annalynn and Zachariah Schloman; and other relatives and friends.

Madge was preceded in death by her husband Wiley in 2004 after 71years of marriage, an infant child, and son James who passed away on March 2, 2008, her parents, and siblings.

She will be sadly missed by all family members and friends.
