Decatur County Journal
Leon, Iowa
Thursday, September 19, 1912

Mr. CHARLES KELLER a well known farmer, living six miles north of Leon, died
suddenly of paralysis of the heart at the Leon hospital Friday forenoon. Mr
KELLER had entered the hospital Wednesday for the purpose of undergoing an
operation in hopes of being relieved of a condition from which he had been
suffering for some time. He had been in the hospital two days being
prepared for the operation. The operation had not commenced and he had
taken but a small amount of the anesthetic when he died almost instantly.
Every means of resuscitation known was used for the purpose of saving his
life, and the three doctors who were present worked over an hour before
giving up hope. It was one of those peculiar conditions in which an
examination failed to disclose any heart trouble but when it came to the
actual test his heart developed weakness and his death resulted. Death from
an anesthetic is not a rare occurrence but is the first case that ever
occurred in this vicinity. The funeral services were held last Sunday at
the home.

CHARLES R. KELLER was born February 7, 1866 in Decatur County, Iowa. He
departed this life September 13, 1912 in the Leon hospital at the age of 46
years, 7 months and 15 days. He leaves two brothers and six sisters all of
whom were present, except Mrs. SARAH STRONG and Mrs. MARTHA BAKER, of
Woodland, California, besides many other relatives and friends. He has
spent his entire life in Decatur County and for a number of years has lived
on the home farm with his two sisters.

His funeral was preached at the old home at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon to a
large congregation by the writer and we laid him away to rest in the Shy
Cemetery to await the resurrection morn. CHARLEY was loved by all who knew
him.
