NUSSBAUM, Helen Marie, 86, of Leon, Iowa, died February 20, 2008 at Westview Acres in Leon. Funeral services were held February 23 at Slade-O'Donnell Funeral Home in Leon with Rev. Max Carmichael officiating. Burial was in Leon Cemetery.

HELEN NUSSBAUM ... Helen Marie Nussbaum, the oldest child of Alvie and Louie [Bronson] Durell, was born February 27, 1921 in Leon, Decatur County, Iowa. She died February 20, 2008, at the age of 86 years, at Westview Acres in Leon.

Helen grew up in Decatur County, Iowa, where she attended rural schools and graduated from Leon High School. She married Earl Edward Nussbaum on February 16, 1940. To this union were born two sons, Earl Edward Nussbaum Jr. and Ronald Leon Nussbaum.

She worked at Crawfords Locker, in the school cafeteria, and at the lumber yard. Helen was initiated into the Rebekahs in March of 1955.

She was preceded in death by her husband Earl Nussbaum, her parents Alvie Durell and Louie Bronson Durell, a brother Billy Durell, brother-in-law Richard Carson, and brother-in-law Richard Baker.

She lived all of her life in Leon. For two years she resided at Terrace Park where she enjoyed doing many activities with the other residents. She then moved into Westview Acres Care Center where she spent the remainder of her life.

Survivors include her sons Earl Jr. (Betty) of Kemp, TX; Ronald (Sandra) of Des Moines, IA; 5 grandchildren: Theresa McBride of Eureka Springs, AR; Krista Nussbaum of TX; David Nussbaum (Jacquelin) of Johnston, IA; Karilyn Nussbaum of Urbandale, IA; Douglas Nussbaum of Woodward, IA; 6 great grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; brother James (Barb) Durell, sister Kathryn Hughes both of Leon, IA; sister Pauline Baker of Corydon, IA; sister Marjorie Carson of Woodburn, IA; other relatives and friends.
