MRS. W.S. JOHNSON died very suddenly at her home on First Avenue, west, Tuesday afternoon, April l7 at l:l5 o'clock, her death being due to heart failure. This weakness of the heart was aggravated by a severe attck of influenza, which befell her February l4, the illness reaching such intensity that for a time her life was despaired. Two relapses occurred resulting in a state of enervation from which she was unable to recover her strength. While standing by a window after luncheon, Tuesday, MRS. JOHNSON fell to the floor in an unconscious state, dying in a few minutes.

JULIA BARNES HOADLEY, daughter of MERWIN and ADALINE (BARNES) HOADLEY, was born at Burton, Ohio, January 20, l858. At the age of five she came with her parents to Garden Grove, Iowa, where she spent her girlhood and where she received her earlier college training while attending the Garden Grove School, one of the finer schools of southern Iowa. Entering Parsons College, she enjoyed a prominent place in the life of the college from which she was graduated in l886. While yet a student at Parsons, she was chosen as County Superintendent of the Decatur County Schools, holding the office for four years.

She was united in marriage to MR. W.S. JOHNSON, May 20, l88(?), going immediately to Leon, Iowa, where MR. JOHNSON was Editor and Publisher of the Leon Journal. MR. and MRS. JOHNSON came to Newton in February, l905, at which time MR. JOHNSON became owner of the Newton Record, which paper he published until l9l9.

Early in life, MRS. JOHNSON became a member of the Presbyterian Church at Garden Grove where MR. JOHNSON's father held the Pastorate, in Newton MRS. JOHNSON has contributed much to the advancement of the local Presbyterian Church and Sunday School. For several years she served as Superintendent of the Sunday School and at the time of her death, was teacher of the Westminister Class of Women. Her particular interest circled about the work of foreign missions and her intense concern for peoples un-enlightened in the Gospel was noted by all members of the church, as she was seldom absent from the missionary meetings.

Unusual was later her devotion to her church and its activities. Faithful, consecrated to its cause, she was during her lifetime a force in its development. The beauty of her faith and her abiding trust remains a sacred memory of those best beloved who are left behind. As a sweet comrade she cared for her family during the years, ever conscious of her trust as a mother and glad of the sacrifices so sure to come in its fulfillment.

Three children were born to MR. and MRS. JOHNSON, all of whom survive her: LEWIS H. JOHNSON, of Marshalltown; MRS. RUTH BRADT and MRS. BERTHA WALLACE, of Newton. Three grandchildren survive: EVELYN WALLACE, and ALBERT and RUSSELL BRADT.

Funeral services were held at the home Thursday afternoon at 2:30, the Rev. W.R. Moore giving the funeral address. Miss Ruth Campbell arranged a quartet consisting of Reva Meredith, Irene Geedes, Ellis Elliott and Jared Loveridge, who sang favorite hymns.
