With deep regret we note the passing away of one of Lucas County's pioneer citizens, MRS. MELINDA S. ENGLAND, which occurred on Friday, March 30, at the home of her son, BIRD ENGLAND, at Leon, Iowa, at the age of 92 years, 6 months and 25 days. The remains were brought to Chariton Friday night and taken to the home of her daughter, MRS. WILL CARNEY, and Tuesday forenoon at ll o'clock, funeral services, conducted by her pastor, were held after which the remains were tenderly laid to rest in the Pine Hill Cemetery to await the resurrection of the just.

MRS. MELINDA SOPHIA ENGLAND, daughter of MR. and MRS. WILLIAM TAYLOR, was born in Vernon County, Kentucky, on September 5, l833. She united with the Christian Church when she was seventeen years of age, and lived righteously all the remaining days of her life, rearing her children in the tuture and admonition of the Lord. In the year, l850, she was married to JOSEPH ENGLAND in Macoupin County, Illinois. To this union ten children were born, four of whom, with the husband, have preceded her to the Great Beyond. The children who are left to mourn their loss are JOHN ENGLAND, of Gunnison, Colorado; MRS. MARY NIZER, of Salida, Colorado; MRS. EDD STOUT, of Purdy, Iowa; MRS. SARAH CLAPP and MRS. WM. CARNEY, of Chariton; BIRD ENGLAND, of Leon, Iowa. MRS. ENGLAND had made her home here in Iowa with her children for some years. She had lived in Lucas and Marion Counties for 57 years. When she first came to Chariton, there was not a railroad in the county, and Chariton boasted of but a few houses and log tavern situatied on the site on the northeast corner of the square where the new hotel is now being erected.

Besides the children mentioned above, MRS. ENGLAND is also survived by 20 grandchildren. The deceased had made all arrangements for her funeral, knowing the fullness of her days soon would be accomplished. Among other details, she selected the following for her pall bearers: Dave Webb, William Carney, Dave Stout, Bird England, Floyd Brownfield, Ed Stout.

Grandma ENGLAND was beloved by all who knew her, and a host of friends will deplore the passing away of this grand, good woman, and will extend sincere sympathy to the bereaved ones.

--Chariton Leader.
