The sudden death of CHARLES H. BARROWS, Saturday evening, took from Lamoni one of her pioneer citizens and a business man of almost continuous activity for over thirty years.

The news of his demise came as a terrible shock to his family and the entire community. He had spent the evening at home with his family as was his usual custom. After the children retired he and his companion enjoyed a quiet chat together in the living room. After ten o'clock they retired to their sleeping apartment up stairs disrobed for the night, and were engaged in prayer, MR. BARROWS leading audibly, when death came.

He stopped in the middle of a sentence, gave a short gasp and all was over so far as his life was concerned. MRS. BARROWS quickly arose and summoned the boys who immediately applied their knowledge of first aid work, attempting artificial respiration, but the spirit had flown and all was hopeless.

MR. BARROWS came to Lamoni in l890, where he went into the drug business with F.M. Weld. Later he had as his partner, Wm. Myers to whom he sold his interest in l896. In a few months afterward he went in business by himself and continued (*can't read - paper torn) until l9l7, when he sold his business to J.F. Jones, who had been in his employ for many years.

During the last few years of his career as a druggist, MR. BARROWS had studied optometry in New York City and elsewhere and this specialty he has followed continually since, being at his office on Saturday, just prior to his passing.

MR. BARROWS had been feeling poorly for several days, complaining of a pain in the region of his heart, but he had kept at his post of duty and little alarm was felt by any except his companion. The four children away from home were quickly summoned and arrived Sunday and Monday morning.

CHARLES H., son of ETHAN and LUCY BARROWS, was born at Salt Lake City, Utah, June l4, l863, passed from this life at his home, Lamoni, Iowa, March 3, l923, aged 59 years, 8 months and l8 days.

On June 23, l892, he was united in marriage to JENNIE M. ALLEN, who survives him. To this union were born seven children, all of whom survive; NINA G., teaching school at New Sharon, Iowa; ALLEN K., and SIDNEY C., of Des Moines; BESSIE V., teaching school at Winterset, Iowa; MALCOLM B.; DONALD I; and STANLEY W., at home. They adopted a little babe, LOIS K., now nine years old, who also survives and who shares with the other children, one with them in all things.

The home life of MR. and MRS. BARROWS left nothing to be desired, as a consequence of which their union has brought to the church, the community and State, this large family of dutiful children, a credit to their parents, and potent for good among men.

MR. BARROWS was on June 29, l884, baptized a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. On January 7, l9l7, he was in this church ordained to the office of teacher. He was faithful to his covenant as a member of the church, and diligent in this office.

With the family, though there mourn no immediate relatives, all the family of MR. BARROWS having proceeded on before, save it be a few cousins, there mourn a large concourse of friends, both of the deceased and his estimable family. These mourn, however, not as those who have no hope, for knowing him as an honorable, a clean, a righteous man, and a Christian, these all rest in the confidence of the hope which is in Christ Jesus the Lord.

His was a beautiful death. At evening prayer, with the words on his lips, "Lord, we love to come to thee in prayer," he passed on out of this dark vail of tears, to the joys of the morning of Christ's rising. Funeral services were held at the Brick Church, Tuesday afternoon in charge of J.A. Gunsolley who offered prayer at the grave. Prayer at the church by F.M. Weld and sermon by J.F. Garver.
