John F. CREES, born Wayne Co., Ohio Jan. 12, 1840, son of Joseph and Catherine Ann (COPPERSMITH) CREES, both natives of Allegheny Co., Penn. They grew to maturity in their native county and there their marriage occurred. In the fall of 1839 they removed to Wayne Co., Ohio, but in the following spring returned to Allegheny Co., Penn., where they remained until 1848 or 49, when they removed to Jefferson County, Iowa.

In the fall of 1854 came to Decatur Co.... The father died when 83 in the faith of the U.B Church. The mother died when about 55. They had 11 children of whom John F. is the third, and of whom 3 sons and four daughters survive: Michael, Mrs. Rebecca DAVIDSON, John R., Mrs. Maria ELLER, Mrs. Catharine COGER, Sallie BECK and Joseph. These have passed away: Ann was a school teacher and died when 20, Cyrus, Mary, and one died in infancy....
