'Attorney JOHN MAYOR of Powhatten, Kansas, Reunites With Family'
An unusual happening, bordering close on the romantic, occurred in Leon
last Thursday afternoon when JOHN MAYOR, an attorney of Powhatton,
Kansas, clasped his mother, MRS. MARTHA BENNETT, in his arms for the
first time in thirty years.
MR. MAYOR is well remembered by the older citizens of Leon with whom he
has been "swapping" reminiscences during the last week. Thirty years
ago, the attorney, then sixteen years of age, left Leon with a circus
which eventually landed him in Kansas where he was married and located
in Hiawatha, from which town he mailed a letter to his mother twenty-six
years ago. The letter was received and answered but through one of
those strange freaks of fate no further correspondence passed between
mother and son.
Two weeks ago Rev. HARRY BENNETT, half brother of MR. MAYOR, started
overland from his home near Decatur to Oklahoma. His route led through
Hiawatha, Kansas, and remembering the half-forgotten letter of 26 years
ago, he made inquiries which resulted in locating the object of his
search at Powhatton, in the same county. That was Wednesday morning of
last week and the next day MR. MAYOR started to Leon, the personal
interview with the brother whom he had last seen as a child flooding him
with memories which caused an irresistible yearning to look again upon
the face of the aged mother he had left so long ago.
The relatives of MR. MAYOR now living in this county, besides his
mother, are F.J. BENNETT of Leon, MRS. NETTIE TURNER of Lamoni, REV.
HARRY BENNETT and HOWARD BENNETT of the Palestine neighborhood.
MR. MAYOR is a typical Kansan, tall, well-built, and possessed of a
remarkable fund of information about the sunflower state and the world
in general. He will return to Kansas at once to look after some
pressing business affairs but expects to come back to Leon soon for a
more extended visit.
