The Decatur County Journal, Leon, Iowa Thurs 12 July 1894, p 5 col 2 XXX

Hazel, the little three year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs Mart Pickering died of her injuries last Thursday afternoon at 3:00 o’clock. The accident occurred about 09:30 o’clock in the morning. The three little children were alone in the house, the eldest being but five years of age. Mrs. Pickering had gone up town on an errand for a short time. It is supposed the children were playing with matches and little Hazel’s clothing was soon enveloped in flames. Her screams attracted the attention of Mrs Leander Powell, a neighbor, who was severely burned in attempting to extinguish the flames. Drs Bowman and Gardner were called and rendered all the medical aid possible, but without avail and at 3 o’clock death came to the relief of the little sufferer. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Hughes at the house the following day at 2 o’clock p.m. The parents have the sympathy of all who know them in their sad affliction.
