Chastain Scrapbook
Early 1870s

Miss Ella Parsons, of Allerton, is visiting
her cousins of his place

Mrs. Robb has found her shawl, and the
postmaster says it pays to advertise.

Chariton saloons were raided last week and a
large amount of whiskey was found.

W. T. Sinclair, of Leroy, attended the
Encampment exercises here last night.

The denizens of "Turkey Run" enjoyed a series
of first class hoe downs the past week.

New Year was quiet in Leon, and most
everybody took advantage of the sleighing and
went visiting their country cousins.

Dr. D. M. Williams, aged 42 and Miss Emily
Kitto, age 23 have been licensed to marry in
Lucas county.

Isaac Tallman is very sick, and not expected
to live. He is perhaps the oldest person in
the county.

Jimmie Cree and Miss Lide Leachman were
married in Davis City on Tuesday.--We hope
neither will ever find it necessary to ask
for a de-Cree.

One hundred and forty-seven years were
yesterday tolled on the M.E. Church bell--Mr.
Penniwell being 70 years old and Mr. McCready
77.

Mrs. Worley Glaze, of Chariton, and Mrs.
Garner, of Oskaloosa, are visiting at James
Goin's.

A lively little load of Leon lads and lasses
spent New Years eve at John Albaugh's in Eden
township.

Quite a congregation watched the "old year
out and the new year in" at the M. E. Church
Friday night.

A party of Leon's young folks spent a
pleasant New Year at H.D. Richardson's
Woodland plantation.

A protracted meeting will begin at the
Christian Church next Sunday, Elder J. K.
Cornell assisting his son, Elder A. B.

The sociable at the Presbyterian Church on
Christmas evening was well attended and a
good time was the result. A nice treat was
on of the features of the occasion, which was
enjoyed by all present. Such occasions are
always pleasant to remember, and those who
were present will not soon forget the
occasion.
