MY TRIP TO MILLER CEMETERY.

Saturday, I headed for Yutzy's Greenhouse in Decatur, Iowa to buy my
favorite 'dragon wing begonias'. After my purchase, I decided to go to
Miller Cemetery which is in Burrell Township.

About 7 years ago, J.R. and I took a motorcycle ride from Indiana to Iowa
and went to the Miller Cemetery.. At that time, the wooden cemetery sign was
still on the post with the bittersweet vine growing around behind it.. We
took lots of pictures with our 35mm camera, which we carried in the saddle
bag of our bike.. When we got home, the camera did not work and the film was
destroyed -- so no pictures...

When I got there yesterday, the cemetery looked pretty much the same as it
had before (however, the sign has been taken) and I remembered several of my
MILLER headstones were laying in a pile -- and -- still are. So, I chalked,
picked up, set up and whatever else I could to get digital pictures. All of
a sudden, two guys came walking out of the woods to the north and climbed
over the fence; they were both carrying cameras, so I wasn't too concerned..
(Remember, I said before that I carry a single handle tire iron -- or --
burglar beater" as a friend calls it, under the front seat of my car)... and
I didn't have it with me..
Anyway, they said they were staying at the cabin up over the hill and were
looking for the CUMMINGS headstone.. They weren't too chatty - and I can
talk the leg off a wooden Indian -- so we all went about our business.. I
turned just in time to see one of the guys pull is pant leg up to look for
ticks, and snapped a picture.. The Devil made me do it!!! They had no sense
of humor at all!!!

My connection to the MILLERs: BRISON MILLER m: MARY MARSHALL BURRELL; their
son, FRANCIS BURRELL MILLER m: PERMELIA SCOTT; their daughter SARAH MILLER
m: ISAAC MCDANIEL; their daughter was named PERMELIA and she m: JAMES CAPPS.

ISAAC MCDANIEL was the son of JOHN MCDANIEL, who came to Decatur Co. in 1837
from Mercer Co., VA. JOHN MCDANIEL thought he was settling in Missouri and
had brought a slave named George with him.. When the 10 mile boundary
dispute was settled, and they knew they were living in Burrel Township, IA,
JOHN MCDANIEL freed his slave, GEORGE. Stories tell that George stayed with
Allen Scott. Then in 1852 JOHN MCDANIEL and his wife, RACHEL, along with
Larkin, John Jr., Lewis and Mahala, headed for Jackson Co., Oregon -
following the Oregon trail. RACHEL has never been found, so she apparently
died somewhere along the way. The MCDANIELs operated one of the best saw
mills on Little Butte Creek in Jackson Co., Oregon until John McDaniel Sr.
(the father) died in 1872.

ISAAC MCDANIEL, JULIA ANN (MCDANIEL) WELDON, and ELIZA (MCDANIEL) SUMMERS
did not go with them.

So, there you have it -- some of my connections to Decatur County, Iowa...
