DECATUR, IOWA, October 29, l894.

EDITOR REPORTER:

I hope you will pardon me for trespassing on
your valuable columns, but
some persons have made statements reflecting
on the loyal patriotism and
courage of MR. JOHN S. DAVIDSON, candidate
for member of Board of
Supervisors, and I have been requested to
write you the facts in his
case. JOHN enlisted when there was no
impending draft, no big state and
national bounties, neither was he a boy of
eighteen who went for the
excitement with his playmates, but a man of
matured years and sound
judgment, who had a pleasant home and
affectionate wife and lovely child
which he left for three years.

He was one of the first to enlist in Company
I. 34th Iowa. He
participated in Chickasaw Bluffs fight, the
capture of Arkansas Pass,
the seige of Vicksburg, was with Banks on Red
River, was at the capture
of Forts Gaines and Morgan at Mobile Bay, and
was always at his best
when fighting was to be done and done his
full share of it until the
close of the war and stayed by the flag until
the last rebel threw down
his arms.

--CAPT. THOS.
WARD,

Co. I. 34th
Iowa.
