Decatur County Journal
February 22, l906

A proper care of the resting places of the
dead has always been regarded
as an evidence of civilization. The
spirit which actuates the living to
embellish the graves of the dead and
perpetuate their memory has existed
in all ages and climes. In our own
country the costly shaft has been
erected to commemorate the deeds of our
illustrious soldiers, statesmen
and diplomats who have crossed beyond the
river. Our beautiful national
cemeteries furnish an illustration of the
desire of the living to show
their veneration and respect for the
heroic and patriotic departed.

In our own county we have a number of
cemeteries that have been
beautified and made attractive by the work
of surviving relatives and
friends. Who has not visited one of these
cemeteries and standing among
the graves of those who "sleep the sleep
that knows no waking", called
to memory Gray's Eulogy in a Country
Churchyard?

One of these country churchyards is
located three-fourths of a mile
south of Elk Chapel in Bloomington
Township. For forty-nine years, MRS.
A.S. ROSS has kept a record of the tenants
of that burying ground and
has furnished us the list with other items
of interest. The cemetery
includes two and thirty-five hundredths of
an acre besides a strip ten
feet wide by fifteen rods long on the east
side of the road. PHOEBE
COOK, wife of HENDERSON COOK, was the
first person buried there. She
died in l86l and her husband survived her
only five days. All of the
four deeds to the cemetery are recorded.
The present trustees are A.S.
ROSS, DUSKY GENTRY and MATTHEY RYAN. A
neat building l0 x l2 is nearly
completed for the purpose of keeping
tools, tent, benches and seats
besides a stove for cold weather. At
present the cemetery contains l76
graves and all of the tenants can be
identified.
A type-written list of the dead has been
prepared and placed on the
inside of a window next to the road. The
passerby may open the shutter
and read the list if he chooses to do so.
The list follows:
