The Evans Family

Edwin G. and Sarah Evans were both born in Cheddar, England, Edwin in 1824
and Sarah in 1822. They had 2 sons, James. G. Evans born in England January
3, 1845, and William Walter Evans born in Delaware County, Iowa, on September
16, 1859. James married Jane Ticknell December 12, 1866, at Dubuque, Iowa.
Eleven children were born to this union. They came to Decatur County and
lived 2 miles west of Leon. He was a farmer and auctioneer. Jane died in
1903. In 1905, Jim married Mrs. Hannah Lorey and moved to California in 1920
where he died in 1925. He was a very devout Christian man and was a member
and officer in both Leon, Iowa, and Los Angeles, California, M. E. Churches.
His son, John H. Evans, accompanied his remains back to Leon for burial March
21, 1925.

Edwin and Sarah, Jim and Jane are all buried in Leon Cemetery.

September 1, 1881, Walter was married to Mary Ann Hewlett, the daughter of
William and Mary Ann (Binning) Hewlett. She was born in Delaware County
March 19, 1862, and came to Grand River in 1876 with her parents. Walter and
Mary Ann bought a farm 3 miles southwest of Grand River, where they raised 2
children, Edith and Arthur. They attended Elk Union School No. 4. In 1900,
they purchased a 240 acre farm from Henry Binning, 6 miles southeast of Grand
River, where they spent their later years. He was the Superintendent of
Maple Grove Sunday School for 20 years before his passing away on January 4,
1936. Funeral services were held at the Maple Grove church January 6, 1936,
by H. O. Tuttle of Van Wert. His mortal remains were borne to their final
resting place in the Funktown (Oak Hill) Cemetery by 6 young men, members of
his Sunday School class. Mary Ann died on January 8, 1937.
