Decatur County Journal
Leon, Iowa
Thursday, September 19, 1912

Some weeks ago the Journal published a notice written by E.W. Sarber, of
Salem, Mo., in which he stated that there was an old soldier buried in
Shannon County, Mo., and that the stone bore the initials E.T.G. With no
date. The old soldier belonged to the Third Iowa Cavalry. Thinking that
perhaps some old soldier would remember the circumstances of the death and
burial and the name, the notice was sent out over the country. A few days
ago W.J. SULLIVAN, of Leon, came to the Journal office and informed us that
the soldier was ELIJAH T. GITTNER, who was accidentally killed at Spring
Valley, Mo., on February 14, 1863, and buried soon afterwards. He was a
member of Company F, Third Iowa Cavalry.
