Eli Stark (1840-1914) came to Iowa from Ind. in 1846. He arrived in Des Moines the same day Iowa was declared a state. He enlisted in the Union Army in 1862 and was discharged at Little Rock, Ark., in 1865. He walked from there to his home in Hopeville.

He married Sarah Wilson (1842-1930) in 1866 [at Hopeville, Iowa]. They raised two sons: John (1888) and Bert (1883); and a foster daughter, Lena Bohal (sic).

John Stark married Esther Cole (1893) on Sept. 30, 1908. Her parents were Doc (1856-1931) and Candice (Adams) Cole (1859-1932). Doc came to Iowa from Tenn. after the Civil War. They farmed three miles north of Grand River for many years. Their children were Nellie, Addie, James, Frank, Esther, Katheryn and Bessie. They also raised Susie Boles.

John and Esther had seventeen children: Noel, Neil, Oneta, Roland d. In infancy, Dale d. 1962, Doris, Ruth, Ruby, Edgar, Bessie, Martha, Ellen, Clifford, Donald, Marjorie, JoAnn and Merlyn.
After the death of John in 1947, Esther moved to Grand River where she ran a restaurant for a few years. She is now [1981] residing in a nursing home in Leon, Iowa.

Neil, the second child of John and Esther Stark, married Goldie South on Dec. 30, 1936. To this union three children were born: Marion (1938), Carolyn (1940), Darwin (1948). He also had one stepdaughter, Eloise Chandler (1932).

NOTES: Eli W. Stark was the son of Sanford and Lucinda (Pruitt) Stark. Sarah Frances (Wilson) Stark was born in 1842, the daugher of John William and Hannah (Landes) Wilson, and died in 1930. Eli and Sarah were interred at Westerville Cemetery.

Wilbert E. "Bert" Stark was born in 1883.

Lena Daisy Lamb, who was Eli and Sarah's niece, was born in Indiana in May of 1872, and died in Decatur City on April 10, 1965. She married Joseph Bohall who was born in Indiana December 22, 1858, and died in Lamoni, Iowa, on March 8, 1945. They were interred at Rose Hill Cemetery, Lamoni.

John Leslie Stark was born October 14, 1880, and died November 3, 1947. Esther (Cole) Stark was born January 17, 1893, and died February 23, 1984. They were interred at Westerville Cemetery.
