Biography ~ Herbert G. Scott
Lamoni, Iowa

The Lamoni Chronicle
September 29, 1904

Herbert G. SCOTT
Herbert G. SCOTT, republican nominee for the office of county auditor, was born in Bloomington township, April 21, 1871, in which township he has continuously lived since birth, on the same old homestead and in the same old house in which he was born. His father, Francis M. SCOTT, entered one hundred and sixty acres, now owned by his widow, in 1854, residing upon it until his death in 1895. Herbert was sent to school and given the advantages offered in the rural districts, completing his education in the Lamoni high school. That Mr. SCOTT is an enterprising, industrious farmer and a good general manger is conceded by his neighbors of every political persuasion. He is a member of the Lamoni Lodge No. 127 I. O. O. F. and aside from being a respected member of that order, is an honored citizen, a man known to be true to friends, true to purpose and true to country. He is a man who would conscientiously discharge the duties of the auditor's office, and we believe intelligently so, too. He was unquestionaly the strongest man before the Republican county convention on September 1; and his campaign has been fraught with favor. If he is the people's choice on November 8, and we believe that he will be, he will make a good auditor.

The request for proposals mentioned in the recent item was signed by my granddad, HG Scott. He was Auditor of the County at that time and at another time he was the Treasurer. The irony is that he really, really wanted to be a farmer. I didn't - and all of the trips we took to various farms were of great interest to me but not in the way of leading me to be a farmer. HG (his only name was Herbert and the G was a fiction like Harry Truman's "S") lost at least three farms to natural causes - that includes the farm my father, 2 uncles and aunt Eileen were born on about a mile or so NE of Lamoni.

He was born on 21 April and I was born on 20 April. He was not without humor because, when I was 6 or 7 he convinced me that I had to be a day older than him.

I lost him when I was in the army but was able to finagle a furlough home for the funeral.

A great man, a soft-spoken man, a firm Methodist and, probably, a magnificent farmer if given the chance (and he probably has the chance now.)
