Biographical and Historical Record of Ringgold and Decatur Counties, Iowa, (Lewis Publishing Company (1887)), p. 616:
"JAMES M. McKEE, farmer and stock-raiser, resides on section 17 of Long Creek Township, where he owns 200 acres of excellent land. He also owns 142 acres in Clarke County. He as born in Athens County, Ohio, in 1823, son of Robert and Nancy McKee, who settled in Decatur County, in 1856, upon the farm where Mr. McKee now resides. The father died in 1868, and the other in 1866. Mr. McKee was married in Missouri, in 1848, to Paulona Mahaffy, born in Ohio in 1826. Their children are -- Samantha, wife of Stephen Little; Clark, Hyman, Albert, Nancy, Bertha, wife of West Bowles; Victor and Erastus. Mr. McKee commenced life without a dollar, but by hard work and good management he has become one of the wealthiest men of the county. Politically he is a Republican. Postoffice, DeKalb."
