The Harry and Nellie Landes Family
"Reflections of Grand River, Iowa 1881-1981"
Page 248, Clarke Pub. Co. Osceola IA. 1981.Harry's parents were John Franklin and Frances Isabell (Trower) Landes, and came from Indiana. John had a general store and grist mill at Westerville for several years.
Harry Landes (1878-1961) married Nellie Grace West (1879-1972), daughter of Charles L. and Mary (Polly) Ann Edwards West. They had three sons who died in infancy. Harry and Nellie lived on a farm before retiring to Grand River, Iowa. Nellie was a seamstress back around 1905 when long dresses and the bustle were in vogue.
Nellie's mother died when she was seven months old and her mother's sister, Lucinda Edwards Foland took Nellie (the youngest of five children) and raised her with her own daughters Laura and Gussie. Sibling affection remained throughout their lives.
Nellie broke her hip in 1961 and her bones were such that repair was impractical, and her health also, so she spent the rest of her life in a nursing home. Relatives took note of her unusual strength of character. Nellie attended the Baptist Church. In failing health, Harry, too, was in a nursing home before his death.
NOTE: Harry died in 1961. Nellie died in 1972. They were interred at the Grand River Cemetery, Grand River, Iowa.
