"H. M. KING, section 2, Grand River Township, one of the respected citizens of Decatur County, was born in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, December 22, 1836, a son of James and Margaret (Neal) King, the father being a native of Pennsylvania, and the mother of Delaware. His parents reared a family of seven children -- John, Eliza Jane, Henry M., Mary Ann, James, a member of the Seventh Iowa Infantry, was killed at the battle of Corinth; Emily and William. Henry M. King grew to manhood in his native State, his youth being spent in assisting with the work of the farm and in attending the common schools, where he received a fair education. In 1856 he came to Iowa, locating in Wapello County, where he lived three years, when he returned to Pennsylvania. He enlisted at the first call for troops in the Thirteenth Pennsylvania Infantry, and after serving a few months, he received an honorable discharge, when he returned to Wapello County, Iowa. He re-enlisted in January, 1864, in Company E, Third Iowa Cavalry, and participated in the engagements near Memphis, and in the raids made against General Price in Arkansas and Missouri, and was in General Wilson's campaign against the rebels. He was again honorably discharge in August, 1865, when he returned to Iowa. After the war he located in Decatur County, where he has 1200 acres of good land under a high state of cultivation, and well improved, and has since followed general farming and stock-raising, in which he is meeting with fair success. Mr. King was united in marriage in December, 1881, to Miss Maria Dunbar, of Decatur County, and to this union have been born three children -- George Melvin, Tama Ann, and Clarence. Politically Mr. King affiliates with the Republican party."
