HER CROCHET NEEDLE IS BUSY
by Herb OWENSGRAND RIVER, IA. – On the farm where she came as a bride more than 51 years ago, Mrs. Henry JIMMERSON constantly is producing crocheted goods – doilies, table covers, Baby booties and bonnets. Mrs. JIMMERSON, past 70, doesn’t remember who taught her to use a crochet hook – but she believes it was her mother. She’s been crocheting, it seems, longer than she can remember.
“I never have produced anything larger than a table cover,” Mrs. JIMMERSON said. “I never would start anything larger than that because I knew that whatever I produced, I would have to do five of them.” (Mrs. JIMMERSON has five children.)
NATIONAL RECOGNITION
Mrs. JIMMERSON’S crocheting has won national recognition. Some of her children entered her work in county fair competition that included a national Crocheting contest.“All through my early married years, I did all the sewing, providing everything – shirts, dresses, coats and overcoats – for my children and myself,” she said.
Born Bessie CHIPP on a farm south of Murray [Iowa], Mrs. JIMMERSON attended a rural school before she married Henry, a Decatur County native who had lived in a log house before the present farmhouse was built.
HOUSE PLANTS
Mrs. JIMMERSON, whose physical movement has been handicapped in recent years, has enjoyed the development of an impressive array of house plants, including African violets, begonias, geraniums and others.Mrs. JIMMERSON has three sons, Robert, who operates a filling station, and Elbert and Lloyd, who cooperate in a combined trucking-feed business in Grand Junction. (sic, should be Grand River, Iowa.)
Two daughters are Mrs. Lowell OVERHOLTZER of Creston [Iowa] and Mrs. Vera BLADES of Davis City [Iowa]. There are 19 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
