Biography ~ Edgar Hines
Leon, Iowa

Edgar Hines moved his practice to Leon in the mid thirties. He had his office above the dime store and adjacent to Dr Jimmy Rowell. At that time there were four (repeat four) dentists in Leon. My dad who was Doc Scott, Doc Hines, the soon-to-retire Dr Jimmy Rowell and Doctor Moore. Dr Moore (whose son was in my class) soon moved to Colfax, IA. Dr Jimmy retired and dad and Doc Hines competed for the whole town.

Doc Hines also was active in music. He headed up the town band and played trumpet. We played concerts most Saturday nights in a structure on the southwest corner of courthouse square. His wife, Hazel, played first trombone to which I played second trombone. Our favorite song was, of course, "Lassus Trombone" where the two of us got to stand up and turn the bear loose.

Their daughter married the music teacher, Richard Parker, although I'm not sure what happened to them.

Doc took a small group of us (a "German oompah band") to Grand River to put on a show. It included the Bethards boys, Cotton Delzell on bass, Don Eliason on trumpet (along with Doc, of course.) And we were a big hit. However, the high point of the evening was the showing in the gym of "The Wizard of Oz" and it was the first time I had seen it. I fell terribly, hopelessly, madly in love with Judy Garland and haven't recovered to this day. What a night!

All in all, competitor or not, the Hines family and the Scott family did just fine. ... jack

NOTE: Dr. Hines was born in 1891, and died in1974. He was interred at Grand River Cemetery, Grand River, Iowa.
