William was born (1828-1895). It is thought that he was born in Scotland, but grew up in Indiana. Sarah was born in 1837, in Holmes County, Ohio, and died in 1892. She was the daughter of Thomas and Dorothea Young Gilmore, who came from Wilts County, England, in 1831.
William went went (sic) to California during the Gold Rush, with a wagon train of 100 people. When he returned back East, he went on to Ohio; and there he met and married Sarah in 1853.
In 1854, William and Sarah went west and settled in Jones Co., in eastern Iowa. The three older children were born there. After 1858, they homesteaded a farm in Long Creek Twp., Decatur Co., north of DeKalb. William and Sarah are buried at Wheelis Cem., Richland Twp.
They had eleven children: Mary Boles (1846-1950) md. Benton Ramsey (1846-1922); is buried in Van Wert Cem.; had eight children: Olive, James, Ella, Fred, Nellie, Alex, Farrie and Addie. James Boles (1856-1935), never married. Buried in Grand River Ce; Dorothea Ellen Boles (1858-1932), md. David Woods (1857-1933); is buried in Wheelis Cem.; had eight children: Allie, Eva, Luetta, Bertha, Addie, Alice, Hattie and Ella. William Boles (1860-1938), md. Emma Emley (1865-1933); is buried in Wheelis Cem.; had six children: Oscar, Ava, Frank, Huldah, Edith, Sherman. Martha Elizabeth (Betty) Boles (1865-1943), md. Issac Foland (1860-1945); is buried in Grand River Cem.; had six children: Charles, George, Leonard, Minnie, Mae and Nina. Wesley Boles (1865-1954), md. Bertha McKee (1866-1938); is buried in Wheelis Cem.; had six children: Floyd, Mae, Sarah, Blanche, Winona and Irene. Marian Ann Boles (1868-1910), md. Warren Rush (1862-1933); is buried in Wheelis Cem.; had two children: Frank and Helen. Walter Boles (1869-1953), md. Susie Dean (1877-1959); is buried in Grand River Cem.; had ten children: Willard, Ray, Ella, Nellie, Della, Orel, Violet, Everett, Wonda and Alma. Charles Boles (1872-1951), Md. Jennie Foland (1875-1944); is buried in Grand River Cem.; had twelve children: Gladys, Reese, Gerna, Russell, Royal, Ermal, Delma, Noel, Verl, Zell, Mansel and Verda. Bertha Boles (1875-1961), is buried in Osceola Cem.; had one child: Lloyd. Sarah Albert Boles (1878-1881); is buried in Wheelis Cem.
