Descendants of the Jeffries Family
By William BakerIsaac Jeffries, the progenitor, lived in Pleasanton, Decatur County, Iowa and is buried near there. Andrew Jack Jeffries’ descendants lived in Decatur County, Iowa, at least at one time. I include information on his siblings, even though they did not move to Iowa. The lines I share with the Jeffries are the Fents, Parretts and Ruperts
Generation No. 1
1. ISAAC1 JEFFERS was born 1790 in Virginia, and died Bef. 1870 in Home of A. J. Jefferies, Clay Township, Harrison County, Missouri. He married MARY NANCY FENT 1816 in Fayette County, Ohio, daughter of PHILLIP FENT and MARY PARRETT.
Notes for ISAAC JEFFERS:
HISTORY OF ISAAC JEFFRIES -- Isaac was born in 1790 in Virginia. Isaac Jeffries came to Ohio from Virginia with his father as a young man. He was a farmer in Jefferson Township, near Jeffersonville, until 1858. In 1816 he married Mary Nancy Fent, daughter of Revolutionary War soldier, Phillip Fent (Faint). Nancy and Isaac were the parents of 10 children. Only 4 were supposed to have been living in 1888. I can only account for 8 and possibly 9 children.Nancy (Fent) Jeffries tombstone shows she was born in 1781. This has to be an error on the monument company who put the date on the tombstone or an error made by a member of the family. If she was born in 1781, this would have made her over 49 years of age when her 4th child was born. There were at least four more children born after her 4th child, Andrew Jackson. According to the U.S. census of Fayette Co, Ohio, Harrison Co., Missouri and McLean Co., Ill., she would have been born about 1791.
In the 1850's, his son, Andrew Jackson Jeffries, temporarily took over Isaac's farm in Ohio, perhaps Isaac being sick or injured or simply too old to bear the strenuous work of farming. In 1858 Isaac and Nancy went to Clay Township, Harrison County, Missouri to make their home with their son Andrew Jackson Jeffries and his family. Issac died near Pleasanton, Decatur County, Iowa at the home of his son A. J. Jefferies.
After Isaac's death, Nancy remained in Missouri for a short while, then she returned to Fayette County, Ohio to make her home with her daughter Mary and husband Amos Hyre (Ames Hire). In March the Hyre's removed to Cheney Grove Township in McLean County, Illinois and Nancy went with them. Isaac was buried in Mercer County Missouri, just south of Pleasanton, Iowa in one of the folowing cemeteries: Akron Cemetery (near Cainsville, Mercer County, MO), Bethel Methodist Cemetery (near Pleasanton, Decatur County, IA), or South Pleasanton Cemetery (near Pleasanton, Decatur County, IA.). Nancy was buried in McClean County, Illinois.

Mary Fent was born in 1791 in Green County, Tennessee (which later became Cocke County, Tennessee). She was the daughter of Peter Phillip Fent, Jr. (Faent, Fann) a Revolutionary War soldier, and Mary Catherine Parrett, (who was the daughter of Frederick Parrett and Barbara Edwards). Mary, (otherwise known as Nancy), married Isaac Jeffries in Ohio in 1816. Isaac and Nancy farmed in Jefferson Township, Fayette County, Ohio until 1858 when they went to Harrison County, Missouri to make their home with their son Andrew Jackson Jeffries and his family. After Isaac's death Nancy remained in Clay Township, Harrison County, Missouri as short while, then she went back to Fayette County to make her home with her daughter Mary and her husband Amos Hyre. She then accompanied her daughter and husband (the Hyres) to McLean County, Illinois. She was buried in McClean County, Illinois. Notes for ANDREW JACKSON JEFFRIES:
History of ANDREW JACKSON JEFFRIES -- Andrew Jack was born in 1832 in Jefferson Township, Fayette County, Ohio to Isaac Jeffries and Mary N. Fent (daughter of Phillip Fent). In late 1848, at the age of 16 he managed his father Isaac's farm in Fayette County, Ohio, then in 1850 he moved to California, spending two years. It's thought that he was trying his hand at the 'gold rush'.
"A.J." returned in 1852 to Ohio. He married Minerva Rupert on August 22, 1854 in Fayette County, Ohio. He and Minerva were first cousins on the Fents side. She was the daughter of William Henry Rupert and Rachel Fent, and a niece of his mother's. She was born in 1831 in Fayette County, Ohio and died in 1894 in Clay Township, Harrison County, Missouri.
In 1854 he settled in Harrison County, Missouri where he was a very early settler, rising to become Clay Township, Harrison County, Missouri's largest landowner and farmer. He owned much of what was termed the Grand River Bottoms between Mercer, Missouri and Davis City, Iowa. He owned land in the three county area of Harrison and Mercer Counties, Missouri and Decatur County, Iowa. His son Isaac inherited most of it. Isaac had a son named Willard that was a doctor that lived in Davis City, Iowa.
In the 1910 and 1920 Pleasanton, Hamilton Township, Decatur County, Iowa Cenuses he is listed as living in the village of Pleasanton, Iowa with his daughter Minnie and her husband Sebastion C. Davis, and children. They lived next door to the Cornett Family.
Andrew died just before 1930 in or around Leon, Decatur County, Iowa, in a nursing home. He was close to 100 Years old. Other family records have stated a DD as 1920, however, there are people living who actually talked to A. J. Jeffries in the latter 1920's, plus he is in the Census for that year. The 1920 date in people's files seems to come from the fact he is last seen listed on the 1920 census. He is sketched in the book, "The History of Harrison County, Missouri" by the Harrison County Historical Society. Andrew is buried in a Cemetery south of the little village of Pleasanton, Iowa. As far as I know he does not have a stone, or it is indecipherable or has fallen down.
There is a biography write-up for him in the book, "History of Harrison and Mercer Counties, Missouri". The book also reported an alternate MD for Andrew of November 07, 1852.

Minerva married a cousin. She was a daughter of Rachel Fent and William Henry Rupert. Rachel Fent was the grandaughter of Phillip Fent. Andrew’s mother was the daughter of Phillip Fent.Minerva’s father William Henry Rupert was the son of George Ludwig Rupert II (Revolutionary War Veteran) and Elizabeth Pursley. Minerva’s grandmother Elizabeth Pursley had been captured by Shawnee Indians at Ruddles Fort, Kentucky on June 24, 1780. Elizabeth Pursley was in captivity for 3 years. Elizabeth’s parents had been scalped. This is the true basis for the ‘Indian legends’ that were in the Jeffries families and allied families for years. The legends were told by Andrew Jack in his old age as, "the family was part Indian". It is thought that either a little embellishment was going on or Andrew was getting senile in his old age. The relatives never really came around to ask him about the family history until he was already up into his 90’s, past probable senility. Andrew knew Elizabeth Pursley, his bride’s Grandmother, who died in 1857, very well. The Jeffries Family still emphatically claims Indian descent, despite no viable proof for it, at least none this researcher can find.

Notes for HENRY JEFFRIES:
Notes for HENRY JEFFRIES: Even though Henry is reported full blood Cherokee by descendants, His father Issac is obviously not, see the information I enclose in the write-up of Andrew Jeffries and his wife for the true source of the 'Indian Legend' in the Jeffries Family. I can find no other Indian connection in the family. Henry's wife Rachel's grandmother Elizabeth Pursley Rupert was CAPTURED by Indians not PART Indian, and they were Delaware and Shawnee, Not Cherokee. There is no Cherokee blood in the 1700-1800's Jeffries Family. I have led an exhausting study of the family to find any, with no result.Children of HENRY JEFFRIES and RACHEL RUPERT are:
