Community Health Center’s Medical Director, Dr. Larry Richard, MD was this year’ recipient of the Outstanding Provider Award. He was recognized during a banquet held October 20 at the Jordan Creek Marriott in Des Moines.
The award was given during the 2015 Iowa Primary Care Conference.
Ted Boesen, CEO for the Iowa Primary Care Association, shared, in part, “The Iowa PCA Award Nominee Committee chose Dr. Richard because of his commitment of providing the best medical care to all his patients at the Community Health Centers of Southern Iowa. The Committee was impressed with the time and resources he has committed to the health center and the patients he serves.”
Dr. Larry Richard earned his MD from the University of Iowa College of Medicine and is Board certified in Family Medicine and has been providing high quality primary care services to Decatur County and the surrounding areas since 1978.
In 2008, Dr. Richard joined Community Health Centers of Southern Iowa, and according to Samantha Cannon, CEO of CHCSI, the organization has benefited greatly since his arrival. “Dr. Richard truly cares about his patients and helping them achieve optimal health,” said Cannon. “His patients are some of the most loyal that I have encountered, as evidenced by the schedule that he keeps (24-28 patients per day/average). Every decision he makes is centered around patient care and consideration, and he insists that be the focus of all we do.”
“How will this benefit the patient?” is his mantra. Whether it be fielding questions from the local long-term care facility in the middle of the night or leaving the fish at the lake to tend to a patient’s needs, Dr. Richard’s commitment is second to none.
“One would be hard pressed to find anyone more eager to teach than Dr. Larry Richard,” said Cannon.
He readily accepts preceptorship for tomorrow’s medical providers, is a constant source of knowledge for his co-workers, and readily offers the opportunity to learn for any that are willing. In addition, Dr. Richard served as an ACLS instructor for many years. Dr. Richard has a deep commitment to his patients, his colleagues, his community, and CHCSI.
“He has been a tremendous asset to our community and our organization,” concluded Cannon.
Dr. Richard was joined by members of the CHCSI staff and by former colleagues of his nearly 38 years as a primary care giver in Decatur County.
