Biography ~ Jon Berkley Wallace
Graceland University, Lamoni, IowaJon Berkley Wallace was born on October 14, 1939, in Murray, Utah.
Jon joined Graceland's English faculty in 970, beginning a classroom career known for emphasizing critical thinking and writing for targeted audiences. He obtained his B.A. from San Francisco State univeristy (1968), his M. A. from the University of WIsconsin-Madison (1970), and his Ph.D. from the University of Iowa (1985).
Jon was a key developer of Graceland's communications program that began in 1987, splitting the study of English into separate concentrations of literature and writing. He also conceived and has taught the Senior Seminar and the Communications Studis courses, as well as a popular winter term class analyzing the John F. Kennedy assassination.
Jon is the author of two books: the poetry collection Looking For Home and the literary criticism Politics of Self.
Jon received the Sears-Roebuck Foundation Teaching Excellence and Campus Leadership Award in 1990 and the Graceland Alumni Association's Excellence in Teaching Award in 1996.
Jon retired as professor emeritus.
Off campus, Jon has served as president of the Lamoni School Board and was a volunteer for the Red Cross where he was the county coordinator, for the Lamoni Bike Trail, and at the Clarke County Animal Shelter in Osceola, Iowa. Jon's wife, Nancy, joined Graceland's conseling center in 1977 and became a key leader in that area.
Jon died on October 11, 2010.
