BIOGRAPHY ~ Aarona Merle "Mugs" (Booker) Kohlman
Graceland University, Lamoni, IowaAarona Merle (Booker) Kohlman was born in Wellston, Ohio, on July 7, 1913, the daughter of Norman Lafayette and Frances (Num) Cochran Booker.
A one-time Crescent, Aarona Kohlman received her associate's degree from Graceland in 1932, and returned in 1964 to obtain her bachelor's degree, the same year she joined the college's English faculty.
As the wife of RLDS appointee, Leslie Woodrow "Les" Kohlman, Aarona lived in Oklahoma, Missouri, and Canada during the time before she joined Graceland's faculty. She had grown up as the daughter of an RLDS church appointee and spent her early teenaged years in Grand Cayman. Aarona's experienced in Grand Cayman influenced her introduction of Graceland's popular winter terms at the island. Aarona frequently taught Caribbean literature during those winter terms at Grand Cayman.
Aarona wrote a pioneering thesis on the dialect of Grand Cayman for her master's degree, which she earned through Iowa State University .
One of Aarona's trademark classes was her course in Literature for Adolescents.
Aarona retired in 1978. In 1981, Graceland's Board of Trustees retroactively granted her the title of professor emerita.
Following retirement, Aarona continued with church work in Grand Cayman. She wrote two books: Wotcha Say: An Introdution to Colloquial Caymanian (Grand Cayman, Cayman ArtVentures, 1980), and Under Tin Roofs: Cayman in the 1920's (George Town, Cayman Islands National Musuem, 1993), an autobiographical childhood memories of the daughter of a missionary.
NOTE: Aarona and Les Kohlman were married on July 18, 1934, Houston, Texas. Les was born in Houston, Texas, on November 1, 1912, and died on September 11, 2006, Independence, Missouri. Aarona Kohlman died at the age of 93 years, on December 20, 2006, Independence, Missouri.
